ABOUT WOLF ISLAND

Edit

The Galapagos Islands are certainly filled with wondrous creatures both on land and under the surface of the ocean. There are many dive sites in the Galapagos that offer many fascinating adventures for divers of all experience levels. One of the most interesting is off of Wolf Island where an abundance of marine life can be found. There are three main areas for diving which include The Caves, Landslide and Shark Bay which can all be experienced on the same dive depending on the conditions.

Located in the north-west section the Galapagos is Wolf Island that along with Darwin Island harbors a number of excellent dive sites. The triangular-shaped island offers three major dive sites.
One of the most interesting is The Caves, a spectacular sight where many different creatures are swimming about this wondrous location. The Caves offers a wealth of spectacular sights that is worth the trip alone to the remote part of the Galapagos Islands. Once you leave this area, the currents will take you to the Landslide which offers a wealth of marine life for you to see.
Finally, there is Shark Bay which is just north of the Landslide and it naturally offers some of the best views of sharks in the islands. A wonderful place to dive, Wolf Island is truly a place for experienced divers to treasure.

The Marine Life of Wolf Island Dive site:
The list of marine life in the region around Wolf Island is staggering, especially when it comes to the large numbers of hammerhead sharks, dolphins or sea lions that populate the area. The dolphins will often race alongside the boat, jumping at times and even blowing water in your face. The large whale sharks however dominate the dive locations during certain times of the year.
Once you exit The Caves, you’ll see numerous marine life including Peruvian and Galapagos grunts, wahoo, amberstripe scad, jacks and much, much more.
Naturally, there are numerous turtles and eagle rays in the area as well which makes for a remarkable viewing experience. You will also see white tip reef sharks amid the soft coral of the caves and other species that make Wolf Island one of the best places to dive in the islands.

Diving Requirements & Experience Level:
Although Wolf Island dive sites are remarkably beautiful, they are not for the novice or inexperienced diver. The rough, choppy waters along with the swift currents are trouble enough. You must pay close attention to your surroundings and not get distracted too much by the wonderful marine life around you. The visibility is quite good on most days, although you should always stay within sight of your swimming partners.
