Certainly one of the most impressive scuba diving sites in the world, Barracuda Point attracts thousands of divers every year to see the amazing underwater life that is located in this region of the world. For many, Barracuda Point represents one of the best experiences that scuba divers can have in this region of the world.
Barracuda Point is located on Sipadan Island, the only oceanic island that is part of Malaysia. Located in the Celebes Sea, the island is just off the east coast of Sabah in East Malaysia or Borneo and consists of living corals that formed over an ancient, extinct volcano.
The diverse sea life around Sipadan Island has been well known since Jacques Cousteau publicized his dives in the region. For many, Barracuda point is the best spot on the island to dive thanks to its clear waters and unique location. Although to be fair there are other spots around the island that also features much of the diverse ocean life in this region.
While Barracuda Point may not exactly be for beginners, it is a relatively easy dive for those who have limited experience and are accompanied by other divers. This is because the visibility is quite good and the relative compactness of the area makes it easy to stay in one place while having some of the best views of sea life imaginable. Unlike all other diving areas around Sipadan Island, Barracuda Point does drop down from a sheer wall that represents the outer ledge from where the ocean life can be found. In fact, the coral wall itself is loaded with turtles and the deeper you go the more magnificent the sea life you will see. However, many dives in this area do not require you to go down more than 10 meters or so before you are surrounded by fish, turtles and barracuda.
There are more than 3,000 species of fish around Sipadan Island and many of them can be seen at Barracuda Point. In addition, there are hawksbill and green turtles, bumphead parrotfish and schools of big-eye trevally as well.
Bannerfish, snapper and jacks are also well represented at Barracuda Point as well. However, the main attraction are the massive schools of barracuda fish that run together in formations that represent a tornado or cyclone that frequent the area. It is certainly possible to be caught up in the eye of the cyclone of barracuda for an experience that you will never forget.
Sipadan Island is one of the most impressive places to vacation thanks to the warm tropical waters, beach resorts and incredible diving opportunities such as Barracuda Point which is a real highlight for anyone who enjoys scuba diving.
For those who want to be surrounded by some of the most fascinating ocean life the world has to offer, Barracuda Point just off Sipadan Island is certainly one of the best places to go.
