THE BOAT

The beautiful Amba dive yacht was the pioneer explorer of some of the Maldives’ northernmost atolls and is one of the few operating in this area. It is thus the perfect option to explore this country’s dreamful underwater world away from the crowds with comfort and style.

This 33 metres liveabord accommodates 20 guests in 10 well-appointed cabins, all with individually controlled AC and their own bathroom. And should you want to have more privacy, this boat offers one thing very rarely found on other ones: the possibility of booking a cabin that has its own private sun deck!

On the main deck is where you will find the spacious saloon to relax indoors in between dives, and this one is a very well equipped one indeed, as it features a TV, a sound system, a DVD, board games, its own library and a battery charging station that ensures you will be able to use all your electronic devices throughout your holidays onboard. An outdoor covered area can also be found on this deck, as well as bar and a coffee shop, ideal for the caffeine lovers!

The upper deck and the sun deck is the perfect area to relax outdoor, as it is equipped with lounge chairs that you can use to get a nice tan before going back home or simply to lay down in the shade while enjoy the stunning Maldivian views.

And one thing that will certainly not be a mere detail if you are prone to sea sickness is the stabiliser that was custom-built directly on the boat’s hull, which makes the whole trip a lot more stable.

All this combined with a relaxed atmosphere, a delicious international cuisine and a fully dedicated crew will make your holidays onboard the Amba a time to remember!

THE DIVING

The Amba schedules dive cruises between October and the end of April and is one of the few boats in the Maldives focusing on the northernmost atolls. This means that you will get to dive in pristine dive sites away from the crowds, while at the same time getting to see the stunning marine life the Maldives are famous for, such as manta rays and loads of sharks!

Onboard the Amba you will be doing 2-3 dives per day and one night dive per week. The main ship is accompanied by a dive auxiliary boat, where all dive equipment is left and from which all diving activities take place, allowing for more precise dive site entries and exits and ensuring peace and quiet onboard the main vessel at all times.

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and Nitrox courses are available, as well as other courses upon request. A private dive guide can also be booked.

You should take all the necessary dive equipment (including dive computer and surface marker buoy) with you, as there is no rental equipment onboard. Tanks and weight belts will be provided. You should also start the trip with proof of a valid dive insurance form a reputable insurer. If your dive certification is Open Water Diver only, for insurance reasons there will be a maximum depth limit of 18 metres, which may mean the exclusion of some dives.

Childs are welcome but minimum age is 12 years. Non divers are also welcome but not every dive site are suitable for snorkeling.

WHEN TO GO

Conditions are at their best between October and May, but the diving is very good all year round, as pelagics are always present. Learn more about when to dive in the Maldives.

If you have the spirit of an explorer who enjoys getting off the beaten track and value having the dive sites pretty much to yourself and your group, the North Maldives route is definitely for you! And the Amba is one of the few boats in the Maldives offering this trip. A real patchwork of marine life, the pristine atolls in the north feature magnificent and colourful colonies of soft coral. And whilst encounters with manta rays are practically guaranteed in the right season, it is the smaller marine life and the diversity of fauna that make this region special and unique.

Maldives has a very special underwater landscape. The country has 26 gorgeous atolls - ring-shaped coral reefs that end up encircling relatively shallow lagoons. These are usually connected to the open ocean through different points through which the water enters and exits, originating channels (called “kandu” locally) with currents rich in nutrients. Based on the reefs’ geographical formation, diving activity in the Maldives can be carried out in either these channels, in the “thilas” or “giris” (underwater rock pinnacles that develop from 30-40 metres to nearly up the surface) or in the “faru” (the edge of the atolls).
